BA, PhD
Director of Research and Tutor in Biblical Studies

Doug teaches Old Testament and Hebrew, using a wide variety of approaches and media. He sees his role as helping students to study the Old Testament with integrity, acknowledging its difficulties while seeing how God continues to speak through it.

'People are often scared of the Old Testament because they don't know what to do with it. I want to see people in ministry committed to exploring the Old Testament in preaching, holding a balance between rigorous thought and practical outworking.'

All St John's students are guaranteed to leave knowing the contemporary relevance of Ecclesiastes, a topic on which Doug has published both popular and academic works. In the future he would like to put his lectures on the college website so that former students can regularly update their Old Testament understanding.

Doug has recently taken over from Dr Stephen Travis as Director of Research and will supervise students engaged in various research projects.

Doug is a committed Baptist who thrives in an open Evangelical Anglican environment. 'I feel valued because I bring a different perspective. Something that is vitally important at St John's is openness both to other Anglican traditions and to other denominations - it is not just openness in terms of "we will accept you" but in terms of "we want to learn from you, we want to learn together, so that we will have a real grasp of what spirituality and faith are all about by drawing on different traditions."'
