- 1 - 5 February 2010
Revelation, Revd Dr Ian Paul
Many find the Book of Revelation obscure, frustrating, even oppressive, rather than being the enlightening, empowering and liberating text it was written to be. This unit, using a wide variety of approaches, will help you discover reading strategies to engage with the text afresh, enabling it to speak powerfully into our contemporary contexts. We will look at different sections of the book, the different issues that arise, and different ways it has been read as well as looking at its overall structure and purpose.
Spaces available on this unit. Email: academic@stjohns-nottm.ac.uk
- 22 - 26 March 2010
Old Testament Ethics, Dr Doug Ingram
Many Christians struggle with the complex ethical issues we face in society today. Many struggle even more with how we use the Bible, and particularly the Old Testament in helping us address such issues. This unit will explore how the Old Testament has been used and help students think through the relevant issues in making use of the Old Testament when facing ethical questions.
Spaces available on this unit with on-site accommodation available. Book early to reserve your place. Email: academic@stjohns-nottm.ac.uk
- 24 - 28 May 2010
Christian Apologetics in a Postmodern World, Revd Dr Tim Hull
What does it mean for Christians to give a reason for the hope that is within them in our contemporary world? How has the rise of our modern world and its transformation into postmodernity affected the defence of the faith? What are the most pressing questions that challenge our faith today - the question of suffering, or the dialogue between faith and science? These are the issues we will explore, examine, analyse and discuss with the help of multimedia resources.
Spaces available on this unit but NO on-site accommodation available. Book early to reserve your place. Email: academic@stjohns-nottm.ac.uk
4-week units for 2009/10:
- 22 February - 19 March 2010
Virtual World, Roy McCloughry, Jo Pimlott and Revd Dr Tim Hull
This unit focuses on the development of new media (e.g. internet, reality TV, music, integrated media) and its implications for mission and ministry in today's culture. It will engage theologically and philosophically with issues of identity and community and will consider the ethical issues which emerge for those working with new media in a range of contexts.
This unit will be timetabled on Tuesdays during the 4 week period, 9.10am - 12.55pm
- 26 April - 21 May 2010
Engaging Culture, Revd Andii Bowsher
Many fresh expressions and pioneer projects are deeply engaged in relating gospel and culture and much Christian ministry has to respond creatively to cultural issues. This unit seeks to equip us to make that engagement and response even more fruitful and insightful by offering tools of cultural analysis and theological perspectives to enable constructive cultural engagement by Christians. We will consider issues such as power and resistance, ideology, social difference, the interplay of material culture and meanings as well as how these things may be theologically understood.
This unit will be timetabled on Tuesdays during the 4 week period, 9.10am - 12.55pm
