Counselling Courses
St John's Extension Studies is renowned for its extensive experience in theological and pastoral counselling training. Through this training, many hundreds of Christians have been enabled to make the care of God effective in the lives of others - in the church, in the workplace, within the family and in the wider community. We currently offer three different courses, two at an introductory level and a postgraduate diploma (which incorporates a postgraduate certificate)..
Postgraduate Diploma in Pastoral Counselling
A part-time course, taught over 20 days per year at college with extensive theological and practical work in between. Next course starts autumn 2010.
A course validated by the University of Nottingham, integrating professional counselling training with theological understanding of human process and development. It is designed to be of interest to people working in the caring professions, clergy, church pastoral workers, and those considering a career in pastoral counselling. Students exit at certificate level or upgrade to diploma which enables them to work towards BACP accreditation.
C7 Counselling Skills for Pastoral Care
A course taught over a weekend and a further five-day residential with six months distance learning in between. Next course starts September 2010.
An introductory, but very substantial, module including theology with self-reflection as well as skills training. Students can progress to the postgraduate diploma (above) or offer C7 towards the CCS (Certificate in Christian Studies).
Introduction to Listening Skills
A five-day residential course held each Spring.
A stand-alone course for those who want a concentrated experience of listening training. The course is open to anyone but often includes applicants for the postgraduate diploma (above) and students studying the module Human Care on the Diploma of Higher Education in Theology and Vocation.
Typical progression - do not worry if this diagram confuses you.

You may take any of these courses without having to commit yourself to further training!
