Summer School  5-9 July

Ecology and the Bible

Has the New Testament a vision for the whole Planet?

Main speaker: Dr Mark Bredin

Leading evangelical Ronald Sider warns: ‘If we do not offer biblical foundations for environmental actions, we will have only ourselves to blame if environmental activists turn to other, finally inadequate, worldviews and religions'. What is our distinctive Christian witness in this age? We look at Thomas Merton's prayer: Let my eyes see nothing in the world but Your glory, and let my hands touch nothing that is not for your service. We will ask ourselves to what extent we as bearers of God image are praying or not praying these words. We will place this prayer alongside some New Testament texts and the Old Testament's teaching about creation and unpack what the gospel is for the whole of creation. In sum, the New Testament is about forming a community of care making each action a service to God's creation so God's glory may shine on earth.

Summer School  12-16 July

Big Names and Issues in Modern Christian Thought

A multimedia exploration into key characters and issues in modern theology.

Main speaker: Dr Tim Hull

Starting from 18th century enlightenment, we will examine the story of how the Christian faith has risen to the challenges of the modern world.  These challenges include the relationship between faith and history, faith and reason, and faith and science. Over the week we will look at some of the most diverse and interesting ways in which Christian theology has ‘reinvented itself' in the modern world. In the process we will be introduced to the father of modern theology Schleiermacher; the most significant theologian of the 20th century, Karl Barth; and the evangelical response to what they opposed and purposed. We will explore all this with the help of video interviews with experts on these topics and an interactive multimedia time line. So if you want to explore how Christian faith might speak to our modern world this is the summer school for you.

Greek School  19-23 July

Reading the Parables in Greek

Make your own translation of Jesus' Parables

Led by Mrs Sheila Butcher and Dr Mark Bredin

My popular demand we are holding another Greek summer school with a similar format to last year's successful  ‘Translating the Sermon on the Mount'. Anyone with anything from very basic to excellent Greek is welcome and invited to interpret and form the beginnings of a translation of a selection of the parables. We will use Greek to sharpen our awareness of the various translations. The parables are so familiar to many that we miss the treasures that are contained in them because we tend to have certain translations fixed in our minds. For instance, the story often called ‘The Prodigal Son'. The aim of this school is very practical and we hope that students will progress in establishing their own personal translations with the help of a good library and experienced teachers.

Mark says about the week:
"We will use Greek to sharpen our awareness of the various translations. The ‘sermon' is so familiar to many that we can sometimes miss the treasures that are contained in it. This is because we tend to have certain translations fixed in our minds. For example, what does Jesus mean by ‘Do not resist your enemy'? We will discover the meaning of this by paying attention to the Greek verb that is translated ‘to resist'. The aim of this school is very practical; I hope students will progress in establishing their own personal translations with the help of a good library and experienced teachers."

The week also includes Bible Study, Worship and some fun activities! If you have started Greek and given it up this is the course for you! If you are studying A6, or planning to do so, you will enjoy meeting others in the same boat. The course is open to anyone. See link below for a booking form.
